Walter Wesley Sloan (January 15, 1948) was born and raised in Chicago. He graduated J. Sterling Morton West high school in Berwyn, Illinois, where he played football, wrestled, and was on the baseball team. He gave up those sports during his junior year to compete in competitive artistic roller skating. From 1967 to 1970, he won six titles as a United States Amateur Roller Skating Association national figure skating champion.
Walt graduated the University of Illinois - Chicago in 1970 with a BS in Applied Physics and followed his father’s footsteps into a career in engineering. He subsequently earned an MS in Metallurgy and Materials Science from Lehigh University in 1974 and an MBA in Finance from the University of Chicago in 1980. Walt is a published author in the Journal of Addictive Diseases, has eight patents in the fields of optical electronic instrumentation and electronic commerce, and is a member of Mensa.
In 1978, Walt began composing and performing song parodies, acting, singing, and playing the guitar and banjo at his company's monthly office meetings. This led to invitations to perform at his company’s regional and national events. By 1984 he had performed for employee audiences of several hundred people from all over the country, at venues that included Marriott’s Lincolnshire Resort and the Opryland Hotel in Nashville. In 1993 Walt made his first of over 20 appearances in community and professional theatre. In 2004 he ventured from theatre, performing as a featured extra in an episode of MTV’s High School Stories. This was followed by extra work in two independent films. Since then he has had supporting or principal roles in more than thirty independent films, TV shows and pilots, and Internet web series. Walt appeared in his first national commercial during the broadcast of Super Bowl XLIV.
Walt sings bass/baritone for The Buckthorns, a mixed 13-member group that has been singing both a cappella and accompanied arrangements of popular songs in the Chicago area since 1996. Walt has been married for 38 years and has three children and two grandchildren.
